Boston-based architecture firm, Finegold Alexander Architects, has been awarded the Gold-level award in the Facilities III category by OFFICER Magazine’s Officer Station Design Award (OSDA) program. The award recognizes the firm’s exceptional renovation of the historic 1908 Lower Basin Barracks for the Massachusetts State Police.
The project, completed in 2023, transformed the undersized and dilapidated facility into a state-of-the-art space that supports the State Police’s current and future needs. Finegold Alexander preserved the building’s historic integrity while modernizing its structure and adding additional space for the consolidation of State Police troops. The design features an all-electric HVAC system, interior light shelves for ample daylighting, and a public green space that serves as a gateway to Boston’s Esplanade. The Lower Basin Barracks is the only state police facility in Boston and is located in the Lower Charles River Basin. Finegold Alexander worked closely with the Massachusetts Historical Commission and the Boston Landmarks Commission to create a welcoming and accessible space for the public, with plenty of parkland, conference space for community groups, and panoramic views of the Charles River.
The firm’s expertise in historic preservation is showcased in this project, demonstrating their ability to revitalize important public spaces. Finegold Alexander has an extensive portfolio of civic projects in the New England region and is known for their commitment to adapting and preserving historic spaces for the benefit of local communities.
