Groom Construction, Co., Inc. has successfully finished the construction of the Coolidge Corner Theatre in Brookline, MA. The $14 million expansion project was officially unveiled at a ribbon cutting ceremony on March 26, 2024, and opened its doors to the public the following day. Working in collaboration with the award-winning architecture firm Höweler + Yoon, Groom Construction played a key role in restoring and expanding this historic landmark theater in downtown Brookline.
The Coolidge Corner Theatre, originally built in 1933 as the community’s first movie theater, underwent a significant transformation with the addition of a new 14,000 square-foot, three-story expansion. The expansion includes two state-of-the-art theaters, a modern lobby, a media library, upgraded bathrooms on every floor, an elevator, staircase, and a third-floor education and events center with panoramic views. The new center also features a catering kitchen, terrace, and blackout shades for screenings, all designed to enhance the overall moviegoing experience.
Eric Höweler, co-founder of Höweler + Yoon, emphasized the blend of Art Deco aesthetics with contemporary architectural expression in the design of the expansion. The additional theaters will not only increase seating capacity but also allow for a more diverse selection of programming, including classic films, foreign movies, midnight screenings, and more. The Education and Community Engagement Center will serve as a hub for educational programs and events, further enhancing the theater’s role in the community.
The collaboration between Groom Construction, Höweler + Yoon Architects, and the Coolidge Corner Theatre Foundation has been instrumental in bringing this project to fruition. The dedication, expertise, and passion of all involved have resulted in a successful integration of new construction with the historic building.
