Sears highlighted his accomplishments and the challenges faced by NAR, including settling lawsuits affecting Realtors’ commissions and navigating investigations from the Department of Justice.
Despite these challenges, Sears emphasized NAR’s dedication to advocacy and education for the real estate industry and its commitment to serving consumers.
He urged cooperation with the DOJ and emphasized the importance of educating buyers and sellers on commission structures. Sears also warned against operating outside of settlement agreements to avoid legal repercussions.
“Don’t get cute,” he cautioned.
“Do not attempt to circumvent commissions, compensation offers, or any related matters. Consider both the literal and intended meaning of the settlement. Prioritize the consumer’s interests, as that will serve as your best defense.”
“I am concerned that the Department of Justice will scrutinize this closely,” Sears stated. “I do not want any of my members or brokerages to become targets.”
Sears received two rounds of applause from the crowd during his speech, including a moment when Peters thanked him for addressing the audience at Inman Connect despite recent challenges faced by the organization.”
