The 2023 Internet Crime report from the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) was recently released, providing insights into the cyber threat landscape based on data from reported complaints. According to the FBI, phishing schemes were the most frequently reported crime in 2023, using unsolicited e-mails, text messages, and phone calls to request personal, financial, and login credentials. The crimes with the highest reported losses were attributed to investment scams, which deceive investors with false information.
FBI Special Agent in Charge Robert Tripp stated, “IC3 is an important tool for the FBI to combat the rising tide of cyber threats. When the public reports incidents to the IC3, they provide valuable information that helps advance investigations, connect complaints, identify trends, and share information with other FBI offices and law enforcement partners nationwide.”
