  1. 2 ways to look at it, if you move here for retirement from out of state, absolutely worst place especially if you're not wealthy. If you've lived here for 20 plus years, own your home with no mortgage and have decent retirement savings, you're all set. I'm planning for the latter, love it here and by the time I retire the weather will be much milder in the winters.

  2. I think that retiring somewhere in a downtown Boston neighborhood would be the hack here. Totally agree about excise tax but who needs a car if you live downtown? I have a wife and kids and the car still only leaves the garage if we are going on a road trip. And property taxes are actually quite reasonable in Boston with the residential exemption for a primary residence. No mention of insurance but again, quite reasonable here as opposed to places like Florida. We haven't made up our minds about if we would stay here forever or not but there are certainly worse places out there.
