We recently covered the 2025 Atlas Van Lines Migration Patterns report on where people are moving. Now we’re looking at United Van Lines’ 49th Annual National Movers Study, which finds that most Americans are relocating to be closer to family, with job opportunities next in line.
Interstate moves today involve weighing several competing considerations. Overall, migration continues to trend from the North and Midwest toward the South, with many inbound moves headed to small- and mid-sized metro areas. This reflects lingering COVID-era preferences for lower-density living alongside continued pressure to find more affordable housing, said Michael A. Stoll, Economist and Professor in the Department of Public Policy at UCLA.

The top inbound states of 2025 were:
- Oregon
- West Virginia
- South Carolina
- Delaware
- Minnesota
- Idaho
- North Carolina
- Arkansas
- Alabama
- Nevada
The top outbound states of 2025 were:
- New Jersey
- New York
- California
- North Dakota
- Colorado
- Mississippi
- Massachusetts
